I’m usually kinda rubbish at strategy games so I tend to stay the fuck away from their multiplayer parts (except in Lan.. where I’m not gonna get insulted by 17 years old boys on 2vs2 matches). But co-op, man, strategy co-op is something I’d like to see done properly. There are so many boardgame mechanics based around co-op (competitive or otherwise) that are yet to be put in videogame form. Think of playing something like Shadow Over Camelot or Descent online with friends!
Dawn of War 2 has actually nothing to do with all that, but The Last Stand is something that goes close to what I’m talking about. It is a nice little feature added via free DLC and it feels a lot like rts for busy people. It is co-op, there’s some strategy and rpg involved but it is fast and you can hop in pretty much istantly. There’s also a score counter - and if you come from the 80s you probably know that high-scores are awesome. It could use some variety and more depth, sure (the incoming standalone expansion should add a new Tyrannid playable character - that’s a start), but I kinda expect it to evolve into something more polished and complete outside of DOW, like what happened to Tower Defense or a mod like DOTA.
So: fast strategy, no resource management, co-op play. There’s a market for that, you know.
