2010 movie log #20 - Carlito’s Way (1993, Dir. Brian de Palma)
Watching it now it’s a very different movie than i remembered loving as a teenager. Not that it’s bad now, no, it’s still brilliant, but i found in it a tinge of irony i had never noticed before.
Carlito himself has this kind of flair about him, does everything with panache, like the over the top speech in the court room, the famous Carlito pool trick shot, his strutting down the barrio with the leather trenchcoat on in fucking august and other stuff. He enjoys the spotlight, he’s not a playa but still crushes a lot, to quote another portorican monument.
Carlito is not stone cold like Michael Corleone, he’s more like Sonny, red blooded and passionate, he’s a fuck up and he knows it, and that’s why makes such a perfect tragic figure.
Side note: Robert Downey Jr borrowed a lot from Carlito for his new and improved ‘cocky but charming’ persona, right down to the look.
